Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you have a showroom?

A. No, we do not have a showroom as we strive to keep our costs down - a saving which we can then pass on to our customers.

Q. Do you think one or two windows in the building gives enough light?

A. Yes, absolutely. Our photos are very deceptive and do not give an accurate impression of how light it is in our buildings. Please look at the Photos Interior photo gallery to see that our buildings have plenty of natural light. When you take a photo from the outside, the building looks dark inside because the windows are anti-UV reflective. Some companies have walls made virtually entirely of glass but such buildings tend to get very hot and you lose wall space which you need for desks, shelving etc. If you have a desk against a glass wall, it is also not very nice to look at from the outside.

Q. Will I have to paint my building again in a few years time like I do with my garden shed?

A. No - the timber on the walls is pressure treated right through to the centre.

Q. How secure is the stable door?

A. Very secure - it has 6 securing points.

Q. Is my office "green" (environmentally friendly)?

A. The only thing that is not recyclable is the roof tiles.

Q. What do most people put on the floor?

A. I would say that 50% use fitted carpet (you can buy remnants very cheaply), 10% use carpet tiles and the rest use laminate flooring.

Q. What is my building like for being sound-proof?

A. Excellent - you cannot beat a cavity wall and double glazing - and even the window in the door is double glazed. Timber absorbs sound, unlike metal which amplifies it.

Q. What is so great about having cavity walls?

A. 1) It is much warmer so you can use your building in the winter and summer. 2) Sound proofing. 3) If you have solid timber walls (even quite thick) and have a knot or a crack in the timber, water can leak in. 4) It feels more like a house than a garden shed. 5) You can hide your electric cables in the cavity so no wires are visible.

Q. Is it easy to insure my building?

A. Most house insurance policies already cover your garden building but please check your policy carefully.

Q. Do you provide a guarantee for your building?

A. Yes we do. The guarantee covers faulty materials and lasts for 2 years. This guarantee is not valid if:
- damage is caused by overhanging trees
- damage is caused by neglect of the building
- damage is caused by blocked guttering
- damage is caused by flooding
- damage is caused as a result of a poor foundation and base
- the building is altered or changed in any way
- the customer does not follow recommendations about the maintenance and upkeep of the building.
It is the customers' responsibility to install any land-drains and provide the means for the removal of the roof water from the building.

Q. Do we need planning permission for our building?

A. In our experience planning permission has not been necessary, except once for a build in a national park. We would, however, always advise customers to check with their local authority for a definitive response. Please look at the Planning Portal for general guildelines - this is the government's online service for planning or check with your local or district council.

Q. How long will the installation of my building take?

A. In a nutshell - for the small buildings 2-3 days, weather allowing. For the larger buildings timings differ as the buidlings are constructed on site. All people who purchase bespoke building will be informed of the length of the installation.

Q. Can you install electrics and other cables?

A. According to newly introduced British legislation, all electrical installation must be done by a fully qualified  and registered electrician. We would suggest that it would be best to find an electrician locally, ask amongst friends or neighbours or look in the Yellow Pages.

Q. What is the time interval between the placing of an order and the installation of the building?

A. We work on a first come first served basis. When we receive the 75% deposit payment, we contact the customer with the first available installation date. Generally, after we have received the deposit payment, we can install the building within 2-3 weeks but it does depend on the number of orders received at the time. Please email us for our current lead time.
